2020 Alumni Poker Game Recap

I would like to thank everyone who was able to make it out to the poker game yesterday. Admittedly, this event was rushed together as we really wanted to get it in this year. We were able to muster up a 5 man game that took way longer than expected but was extremely fun and had me knocking out Lee-Lun for the win. A huge thank you to Michael Lee-Lun for hosting the even at his house and with the help of Michael Gusciora cooking an insane amount of delicious food. Also want to acknowledge and thank those who were not able to make it this time but did donate to the chapter room renovations. This event raised $850 bringing our total up to $2,160. That is going to make a significant difference.

We are beginning to plan our next event for early 2021. It is going to be a family friendly bowling tournament. We encourage everyone to bring the wife and kids. The tentative dates are either Jan. 30th or Feb. 6th. Obviously this is dependent on where covid restrictions trend over the next few months but as of right now the allies I’ve spoken with seem confident we will be able to host up to 80 people while observing the current regulations.

2020 Sigma Alumni Golf Outing Recap

Brothers,

I want to thank everyone again who was able to make it to the golf outing today. Also want to thank Zuffi, Pops and Ebert for helping me put this event together. We had a total of 37 players making it one of our biggest outings ever. TJ Alcorn had the longest drive on hole #9 and Richie Szeliga had closest to the pin on hole #15. The highest role number was James Ebert (1227) and the lowest was Greg Davis (907). We could not have asked for nicer weather and it was great seeing brothers who graduated in different decades getting together and sharing stories. Today we raised $1310 that will be put towards renovating our houses chapter room. Based on the amount of people who wanted to attend but were unable to, I believe we can get over 50 players for next year’s outing which will hopefully take place in June 2021.

We are currently working on planning our next two events including a family bowling night for some time in early 2021 and the alumni poker game. An alumni has volunteered his back yard for the game and even offered to roast some sort of animal. He was actually very excited about that part. The tentative date is Saturday September 19th. If you would be interested in attending, please click here to register. It would be a $100 buy-in with $50 going to the chapter room renovations.

Briefly, I would like to update everyone about what is going on at the house. Stevens has elected to continue virtual learning for at least the Fall semester except for incoming freshman. What this means for the house is that for at least the first semester of this year there will be no residence and therefore no income. Hopefully things return to normal in the Spring semester, but one must assume they may not. Fortunately, Bob Giarratano and the Sigma Chapter Housing Association have done a superb job at keeping our houses affairs in order and we will be able to weather this storm for the foreseeable future.

But this also provides an opportunity to perform much need maintenance and renovations to the house while it is unoccupied. In the coming months we may try to put together a legitimate alumni work weekend where brothers can lend any expertise or skills they may have to a specific project and help move these renovations forward. We will post more about that and the other events in the coming weeks.

Today was a good day to be a Sigma.

Chapter Room Restoration

Thanks to the many people who volunteered back in November, deconstruction of the chapter room was completed in one day. Since then the Housing Corporation has been working on infrastructure repairs in and around the room including repairing a minor leak on the south wall, installing a new interior door leading into the room from the basement, as well as a new exterior door on the north side of the room. These projects are expected to be completed sometime in the Spring allowing us to move forward into Phase 3.

In order to complete the entire project by November 2021, we will be holding 3 alumni work weekends through the year in May, July and September. If you would like to contribute your time and expertise please visit the alumni website for more information or email sigma1050@gmail.com.

Upcoming Events

Alumni Work Weekend

Saturday, May 22nd 10:00am to 4:00pm

We will be working on the following projects in relation to the Chapter Room Restoration;

Removing the concrete walkway along the northside of the house. The walkway is currently pitched toward the house and needs to be corrected. The new walkway will be filled and poured by professionals at a later date.

Removing the old paint from the chapter room walls. In order to prepare the walls for a fresh new paint job we need to wire wheel and bleach wash the existing surface. We will need a substantial amount of cordless drills with fully charged back up batteries and wire wheels. If you happen to have an extra drill and can pick up a second wire wheel, I'm sure it will be used by someone.

The benches and ceremonial fixtures will be thoroughly cleaned by then and ready for formal repair. Restoration varies from filling gaps and voids with epoxy to fully reassembling certain pieces and replacing broken parts.
