New Year’s Announcements

Happy New Year everyone. We have a few announcements to start off 2021.

The family bowling party is next month on February 6th. If you are planning to attend, please go to https://www.812sigmaalumni.org/bowling-registration and sign up. We will need to confirm attendance with the alley one week prior to the event.

Phase 2 of the chapter room restoration project is underway. The Housing Corp is addressing infrastructure upgrades that need to be completed before we can move forward with rebuilding the room. Meanwhile we need to begin the restoration of the benches and ceremonial fixtures that were saved and set aside during deconstruction.

A few members from the project committee will be meeting at the House later this month to assess their current condition and develop a game plan. Most of the physical work, sanding, and staining, will be completed at the next work weekend in May but some of the benches and especially the podiums do need considerable repair. We are looking for anyone with experience in wood working who may be able to lend their expertise and join us. Please contact me directly if you are interested.

Lastly, we are starting to plan the 2021 Alumni Golf Outing. To help us maximize participation please go to https://www.812sigmaalumni.org/golf-questionnaire and let us know your thoughts. We would really appreciate the feedback.

Chapter Room Restoration Phase 1 Completed

Thank you very much to everyone who showed up to the House for the work weekend. Phase 1 is complete. The chapter room has been deconstructed. The benches and ceremonial fixtures have been set aside for renovation later and the bench platforms have been ripped up and discarded. It is quite the site seeing the room completely bare and empty.

Phase 2 will begin as soon as possible and includes fixing the current water situation near the alter, waterproofing the entire room and formally decommissioning the “fire escape”. We opened that door today for what must have been the first time in over 30 years. Our goal is to have phase 2 completed by the end of this Spring so we can move on to restoring the fixtures and rebuilding the room.

The next work weekend is tentatively scheduled for May. We already have a list of projects that need to be addressed assuming all goes according to schedule. If anything, today we proved that with just 10 to 15 volunteers we can get a lot accomplished in under 6 hours.

House Renovations and Chapter Room Restoration Project

House Renovations

The Housing Corp has completed a formal house inspection and based on the results, drafted a prioritized list of critical projects that need to be addressed. These include repairs to the roof, upgrades to the exterior façade and a new front door. Other top projects are upgrading the bathrooms and renovations to the living quarters. The house being unoccupied for at least this semester provides a great opportunity to complete many of these projects. We will keep you posted on their progress as they get underway.

Chapter Room Restoration Project

Renovating our chapter room is something everyone can get behind. We are one of the very few chapters to be fortunate enough to have a dedicated chapter room that models the hall at national. This is going to be a longer-term project that will be funded directly through the donations collected from the alumni events. Once completed the chapter room will be fittingly named in honor of Emile Hill.

Obviously, we want to complete this project thoroughly and with a result that we can all be proud of. In order to best do so we are seeking to put together a small committee of about 5 to 6 volunteers who would be responsible for assessing the current situation in the chapter room, drafting a master plan and organizing the efforts. The physical work would be a combined effort between outsourcing to professionals for electrical and plumbing, alumni volunteer work weekends and the active brotherhood.

If you would like to participate on the committee please contact me at rzieja@gmail.com or text me 973-617-6177. Anyone with project management experience or who is in general, good with household projects is very welcome.

 2021 Spring Newsletter

Chapter Room Restoration

Thanks to the many people who volunteered back in November, deconstruction of the chapter room was completed in one day. Since then the Housing Corporation has been working on infrastructure repairs in and around the room including repairing a minor leak on the south wall, installing a new interior door leading into the room from the basement, as well as a new exterior door on the north side of the room. These projects are expected to be completed sometime in the Spring allowing us to move forward into Phase 3.

In order to complete the entire project by November 2021, we will be holding 3 alumni work weekends through the year in May, July and September. If you would like to contribute your time and expertise please visit the alumni website for more information or email sigma1050@gmail.com.

Upcoming Events

Alumni Work Weekend

Saturday, May 22nd 10:00am to 4:00pm

We will be working on the following projects in relation to the Chapter Room Restoration;

Removing the concrete walkway along the northside of the house. The walkway is currently pitched toward the house and needs to be corrected. The new walkway will be filled and poured by professionals at a later date.

Removing the old paint from the chapter room walls. In order to prepare the walls for a fresh new paint job we need to wire wheel and bleach wash the existing surface. We will need a substantial amount of cordless drills with fully charged back up batteries and wire wheels. If you happen to have an extra drill and can pick up a second wire wheel, I'm sure it will be used by someone.

The benches and ceremonial fixtures will be thoroughly cleaned by then and ready for formal repair. Restoration varies from filling gaps and voids with epoxy to fully reassembling certain pieces and replacing broken parts.
